Libelium opens beta testing call for free installation of its New Air Quality Station in polluted cities

With the aim of fighting pollution and climate change, Libelium, an IoT technology manufacturer, is opening a call for cities with severe levels of air pollution and extreme meteorological conditions that want to test for free its new air quality measurement technology based on machine learning algorithms.

With this release program, Libelium presents its new Air Quality Station, a high-precision device that stands out for its compatibility with air pollution analysis metrology devices.

“With this new platform, Libelium helps smart cities to add capillarity to their urban air measurement network -explains Alicia Asín, CEO of Libelium-. Many cities have a single device with high metrological capacity that costs hundreds of thousands of euros so they can only measure pollution levels in a certain location. With IoT technology, more measurement points can be added with quality and precision devices that reduce the required investment to a tenth of the cost.

The new Air Quality Station device includes a machine learning model designed on a basis of algorithms and statistical data analysis. In this way, the device learns and improves its accuracy as it acquires data that is compared and analyzed with those recorded by official reference stations. Libelium has tested the new technology at five sites with different weather conditions and different pollution levels to feed the artificial intelligence of the device and provide continuous improvement in the accuracy of the device. Libelium’s new Air Quality Station allows the measurement of the five most important pollutant gases (CO, NO, NO2, SO2 and O3) as well as particulate matter (PM1, PM2.5 and PM10), weather conditions and noise levels. The device includes communication via 4G and LoRaWAN, rich remote management thanks to advanced cloud that facilitates OTA (over the air) programming and reconfiguration. It also allows real-time data visualization through its multiple cloud compatibility via the Libelium Bridge.

Terms and conditions for participating in the Beta Testing call

1. Who can apply to participate in the program?

  • Public administration (local councils, regional governments, national governments or public companies)
  • Engineering and systems integration companies (consultancy firms that develop customized technology projects, technology companies with expertise in the installation of high-precision air pollution measurement sensor devices and information processing in the cloud)
  • Telecoms companies participating in public tenders for environmental quality measurement projects
  • Environmental quality measurement technology manufacturing companies dedicated to the integral maintenance and operation of air pollution analysis networks
  • Environmental consultancy companies
  • Universities and research centers involved in pollution and climate change studies

2. Installation conditions of the Air Quality Station

2.1.- Location and installation of the device:

Libelium will choose those candidates who will install the new Air Quality Station next to a reference station of high metrological precision in locations of heavy pollution, either in urban sites of highly polluted cities or in places close to factories with highly polluting emissions.

What is considered high pollution? Below is the list of minimum thresholds that each reference station has to detect in order for that location to be a candidate to place one of Libelium’s Air Quality Stations. These values must be reached more or less periodically, even if not daily, so that there is an interesting range of data for each sensor. They should not all be met at the same time.

◦ O3: 125 ppb
◦ NO2: 100 ppb
◦ NO: 100 ppb
◦ CO: 600 ppb
◦ SO2: 25 ppb

The installation of the device shall be performed one meter away from the professional air quality measurement station for the purpose of providing the data from that reference station to Libelium.

The professional reference station shall measure at least three of the following gases: CO, NO, NO2, NO2, O3, SO2, PM. In addition, it must record temperature, humidity and atmospheric pressure data.

The data collected by the professional reference station must be provided to Libelium at an interval of 10 to 15 minutes.

The gas concentration data provided by the professional reference station shall be in units of μg/m3 except for the CO parameter which shall be defined in mg/m3.

2.2.- Duration of the installation and data collection:

The new Air Quality Station will be given to the program participant free of charge with the commitment that its installation will be performed imminently upon receipt of the device and it will be in operation next to the reference station for at least 12 months of time.

Shipping costs will be borne by Libelium. The participant will be responsible for the installation costs of the device.

The connectivity of the Air Quality Station will be through 4G. The applicant will have to contract the SIM card to provide the connectivity. Libelium will provide the necessary support for its configuration.

Once the beta testing period has elapsed, the client will be able to keep the device and access the data by contracting the cloud service to access the visualization after budgetary acceptance.

2.3.- Maintenance and support in case of failure:

The hours of technical support required to solve any technical incident shall be covered by Libelium.

In case of any failure of the device that requires disassembly for technical intervention, Libelium will bear the cost of maintenance and replacement of the device if it is not possible to repair it remotely. The cost of disassembly of the damaged device and assembly of the new device once repaired, shall be borne by the applicant. The cost of shipping material to Libelium shall be borne by Libelium.
